If someone told me 14 years ago that I’d be spending most of my day living and exploring the digital universe, rather than the real world, I would have dismissed them as insane. Here I am staring at my iPad, iPhone, and Macbook as I write this and waiting for the next important news item from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+ to flash up before me. This is my world and I enjoy it.
I love my job and what I do on the digital space. The feeling is awesome from seeing a new brand flourish online as a result of my digital and social media marketing strategies and solutions, and it fulfils me personally. In a very weird way, I’ve never felt more connected to my abilities and with the help of all the smart devices (laptop, smartphone, tablet), I sometimes feel that I could rule the world from basically anywhere. On one sunny afternoon while sitting at my favourite coffee shop working out a new strategy for one of my clients I glanced up for a few seconds to survey my surroundings.
What happen next began a spine chilling inner dialogue from what we’ve become. It was as if I’m wandering on the bridge of the Enterprise spaceship on Star Trek. Everyone around me was submersed in technology by staring into the digital world through their personal devices – each lost in their own realistic digital world.
I know this experience happens daily, but just think about all the methods and ways we are using everyday to feel connected. Sometimes it makes us wander down paths we would never normally have considered. Now think back a few years. Did you ever think you will have the ability to be so connected in your daily doings at work and at home? If you are a business owner, a simple digital strategy just won’t cut it for you if you want to stay ahead of your competitors. How are you going to reach all of these millions of people using the web to do business and relax at the same time? SEO alone won’t cut it, and a simple social media strategy won’t either. It’s time to rethink what you are doing online using old methods.
Suddenly the daydreaming stopped and the eerie silence was broken by the sound of a waiter dropping an empty glass on the floor. This was just a digital wake up call I experienced.
Are we living in the Matrix Anton? Seems like we have to be plugged into the system to perceive our digital reality. 🙂
