Search is shifting from “finding links” to “getting answers”, and if your business relies on organic visibility, you cannot ignore what that means for AI Search Optimisation (AEO & GEO). AI-powered assistants, conversational tools and task-based agents are increasingly involved in research and decision-making, often summarising options before a user ever clicks through to a website.

Traditional SEO is still essential, but it is no longer the whole story. Visibility now depends on whether AI systems can accurately interpret your content and product information, determine it is trustworthy, and confidently surface it as a recommendation.

This is where two new disciplines come in: Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO). These are not marketing buzzwords. They are practical responses to a real change in how people discover information and how digital platforms present it back to them.

AI Search & Discovery Series

Why the rules of discovery are changing

For years, the path was predictable. A user searched, scanned results, clicked a page and made a decision after reading. Success was measured in rankings, sessions and click-through rate.

AI-driven discovery changes that pattern. People increasingly ask full questions in natural language and expect a direct response. Instead of a list of links, they receive a summary, a shortlist, a comparison or a recommended next step. In many cases, that response is assembled from multiple sources and presented in a way that reduces the need to browse.

The result is a shift from competing for clicks to competing for clarity and confidence. If an AI system cannot clearly understand what you offer, who it is for and why it is credible, it will struggle to recommend you, even if you have strong SEO foundations.

What AEO and GEO actually mean

It helps to think of AEO and GEO as an evolution of optimisation rather than a replacement.

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) focuses on structuring your content and product information so that AI systems can extract accurate answers to real questions. It prioritises directness, context and usefulness. The goal is not clever wording, but clarity.

Strong AEO content makes it immediately clear who a product or service is for, what problem it solves and how it should be understood in practical terms. It reduces ambiguity and removes the need for interpretation.

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) focuses on how your brand appears in AI-generated summaries, recommendations and comparisons. Generative systems aim to be helpful and accurate, which means they favour information that appears consistent, well-supported and credible.

GEO is strengthened when brand and product facts are consistent across sources, when claims are supported by evidence, and when differentiation is explained clearly rather than exaggerated.

Put simply, AEO helps you become easier to understand. GEO helps you become easier to trust and recommend.

The move from discovery to influence

In the old model, discovery happened when someone clicked on your result. In the new model, influence can occur before a click occurs.

AI systems do more than retrieve information. They interpret intent and reframe content into guidance. They may summarise which option is best for a specific use case, explain trade-offs or highlight why one choice is better suited than another.

If your content is vague, generic or purely promotional, it becomes difficult for an AI system to translate it into a confident recommendation. When content is specific, structured and supported, AI tools can more easily compare it, cite it and bring it into the decision-making conversation.

How AI systems decide what to surface

While each system differs, most AI-driven discovery follows a similar logic.

An AI system interprets the intent behind a question, gathers information from indexed pages, structured data, and real-time sources where available, evaluates relevance and credibility, and then generates a response that is useful.

What matters is that the system is not relying solely on headlines or keywords. It evaluates whether the information it finds is complete, consistent and reliable enough to reuse.

This changes what optimisation means. Optimisation is about ensuring your digital presence contains the right facts, expressed clearly, in formats that both humans and machines can interpret confidently.

What stays the same and what needs to change

SEO does not disappear. Technical foundations still matter. Crawlability, indexation, performance and strong information architecture remain critical. AI systems often rely on real-time retrieval and web content to ground their responses.

What changes is the emphasis.

SEO continues to ensure discoverability. AEO and GEO add new layers by focusing on clarity, interpretation and trust. Together, they move optimisation from ranking pages to shaping understanding.

Who inside a business should care

This shift affects more than marketing.

Business leaders need to understand how AI influences perception before a lead arrives. Marketing teams must account for visibility inside AI-generated answers. Performance teams face less direct attribution as influence happens earlier. Web and eCommerce teams play a critical role as data quality becomes a competitive advantage.

When these groups align, the result is a digital presence that is easier for AI systems to interpret and easier for customers to trust.

What to focus on first

For most organisations, the starting point is not advanced tooling. It is clarity.

Key service and product pages should clearly state who they are for, what they solve and what makes them different. Core facts should be explicit rather than implied. Trust signals should be supported by evidence, not slogans. Above all, messaging should be consistent across all channels where your brand appears.

This is not about chasing trends. It is the same discipline good businesses have always needed: clear communication, accurate information and credible proof. The difference is that AI systems now help decide whether that information gets surfaced.
