How social media has changed everything

How social media has changed everything

Everything has moved online.  The rise of blogs, tweeting, videos on YouTube and Facebook has pretty much changed how we socialize and interact online with one another.  Marketing is now more about solid relationships.  Google and Wikipedia have made knowledge and information something that can be acquired on demand.

Online communication

Online communication is not for the elite.  All the communication barriers have been removed.  Tweeters and bloggers are now the experts and they comment about world events – real-time.  Everyone now has the opportunity to be heard online.  The world-wide web has made the world accessible and reachable no matter whom or where you are.

All the boundaries have been removed.  Web 2.0 has really expanded our opportunities to meet and interact from our local neighbourhood to the international scene.  Social media can now take you anywhere.

Your brand is what you represent

Advertising and marketing are not about communicating with the masses.  It is really just about interactive and reaching the individual.  Micro niches and niches have replaced the large market gateways.

Online marketers use social media to build their reputation and brand, never to sell products directly.  Your brand is what you represent, your connection with others and what you care about. You want to be the persuasive and unique voice in your targeted market.  Your ultimate goal with social media is to create a cultural following.

Real time information is king

These days, politicians are listening real-time to what is being said.  Feedback is instant.  Twitter, Facebook and blogs are now working channels of PR.

Today we are living in a world where we cannot hide.  The world online has become transparent. There is really no more hiding in the shadows.  Web 2.0 shines a light on everybody and everything

The internet marketing landscape has changed quite allot in the last couple of years.  It is getting increasingly chaotic.  The old style of controlling your market is dead.  It is about conversing and interactive with your targeted market at ground level.

I completely agree with this post. I especially like the line:

“Online marketers use social media to build their reputation and brand, never to sell products directly.”

Unfortunately, I think people are trying to capitalize with social media in a very similar way that people try to capitalize with e-mail using SPAM. It’s too bad people didn’t get the memo about not selling, selling, selling on social media.
